ABOUT AUNDIE
I was born and raised in Colorado, number 4 of 5 kids, the entire family very involved in athletics. We are a strong baseball/softball family, but also participated in other activities and groups, such as a Ballet Folklorico dance group. I am of mixed race and ethnicity, brought up in a predominately Latino household. My parents were passionate about education, and I was so fortunate to be selected in the first class of the University of Oregon Diversity Building Scholarship program; I took a leap and moved to the Pacific Northwest, never looking back, and happy to call Seattle my new home!
LIFE WITH FOUR SIBLINGS
The first word that comes to mind: Amazing! I loved growing up in a large family; there was always someone to play with, talk to, learn from, fight with, it really kept me on my toes! And as funny as it sounds, it also taught me how to be fiercely independent; there were times I had to just figure it out, everyone was busy doing their own thing and I had to make decisions for myself! Being one of the middle children, but also one of the youngest, I took on a lot of responsibilities, always looking for ways to help make things easier for everyone. But doing so also taught me that I was able to stand out on my own; I had to work hard to earn everything I had, there were no handouts, but there was always a hand up! No matter the distance between us and how incredibly different we all turned out, it is nice to know that we have each other’s backs, when push comes to shove!
PROFESSIONAL EXPERTISE
In all my past work, the key to success is building strong relationships; listening and hearing the needs and wants of others, understanding the “why” behind the ask. No matter what task is at hand, when I have built trust and good relationships with others, I can find a way to deliver strong results. I have experience in Account Management, Contract Administration, CRM Support, Business Development, but I am passionate about People; understanding why we do what we do and finding a way to work more efficiently. My current work here at L+T allows me to have the best of both worlds; I work with an amazing community, who are passionate about their work, as well as get to help manage work behind the scenes.
WHY L+T?
When I found myself part of a reduction in force, during the COVID pandemic, I took the opportunity to put myself first. I decided I was going to be pickier about future employment and not take the first job that came up; and I was fortunate enough to be in a good position to be able to do just that. When I saw the job posting for L+T, it honestly sounded too good to be true; a minority owned business who was focused on work with and for the BIPOC community, passionate about DEI, and paying their employees their worth! How could I pass up an opportunity like that; a job and company that I had been searching for since earning my degree, 20 years in the making! The more I learned about L+T, the more I knew I had to be part of the team; and am lucky enough to be chosen right back!
AREAS OF INTEREST + PASSIONS
Both professional and personal, I am most passionate about People; which is the main reason I chose a degree in Sociology. Looking at race and ethnicity, the history of our country and globe, education, seeing the changes and evolution of how we do what we do, and all the underlying reasons why. Often times, the subject is heavy, so I try and balance that out with spending quality time alone, as well as with family and friends, reading, listening to music, attending concerts and sporting events, cooking, billiards, watching movies, standup comedy and even a good Happy Hour!
ANY BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS?
I would have loved to read more in 2022, which is a new resolution for me in 2023, but here are my top reads for 2022, in no particular order (and 3 are thanks to me landing with L+T):
- Tending by Amy Henderson
- Show Your Worth by Shelmina Babai Abji
- Pay Up by Reshma Saujani
- The Witch Elm by Tana French
- Look What You Made Me Do by Elaine Murphy
BENEFITS OF FLEXIBLE, HIGH-IMPACT WORK
I learned a new word in 2022, Ambivert: a person whose personality has a balance of extrovert and introvert features. I never realized the true stress I was putting on myself every day, trying to fit in a corporate box, with companies who I was a nameless, faceless employee number; making the commute each day to a busy office with hundreds of other people, doing a job I was not passionate about. I do not fit in a box, and Lions + Tigers recognized that; they took that box and allowed for me to stand on top of it to be seen and heard! I feel valued and appreciated, I am excited for work each day and always look forward to how I can help my team do great things! I have been allowed to be authentically me, in a space that works best for me, without fear of repercussions; the most beneficial of all!
ANY ADVICE FOR US?
My advice is, have faith and trust in yourself! We spend too much of our lives working to not love what we do. Stop being scared to try new things, stop being afraid to fail, and don’t worry about being told, no. My parents would always tell me, “You don’t know until you try!” and “Let them say, no; stop doing it for them!”. Don’t count yourself out before you have even begun; things are going to be scary, but that is also the feeling of excitement!
