NFL Supplier Diversity Event

Leveling The Playing Field

Lions + Tigers at the Super Bowl! Not something we ever imagined, but earlier this month we were invited to attend the National Football League’s 2nd annual Supplier Diversity event in Phoenix, Arizona. The event focused on bringing diverse, women-owned businesses together with corporate decision-makers who are committed and seeking to increase the diversity of their suppliers. Account Directors Steven Rowe and Janelle Montgomery showcased our capabilities and liaised with NFL partners.

“The Supplier Diversity event with the NFL was a great opportunity for us to share the Lions + Tigers story with a variety of individuals and businesses. What made the event special was being in community with like-minded individuals and companies focused on promoting women-led, diverse suppliers.” – Steven

Our Spotlight series lets us tell the stories of the people who make up the Lions + Tigers community. Aundie Garcia (she/her) is our Client Success Specialist. Aundie brings her varied experience and love of people to work with her every day, and the results make her a perfect match with L+T. Aundie comes from a big family and loves sports, reading, and diving into her main interest: sociology.

Team Spotlight: Aundie Garcia

A selfie of Aundie smiling in blue glasses and a white sweatshirt.

ABOUT AUNDIE

I was born and raised in Colorado, number 4 of 5 kids, the entire family very involved in athletics. We are a strong baseball/softball family, but also participated in other activities and groups, such as a Ballet Folklorico dance group. I am of mixed race and ethnicity, brought up in a predominately Latino household. My parents were passionate about education, and I was so fortunate to be selected in the first class of the University of Oregon Diversity Building Scholarship program; I took a leap and moved to the Pacific Northwest, never looking back, and happy to call Seattle my new home!

LIFE WITH FOUR SIBLINGS

The first word that comes to mind: Amazing! I loved growing up in a large family; there was always someone to play with, talk to, learn from, fight with, it really kept me on my toes! And as funny as it sounds, it also taught me how to be fiercely independent; there were times I had to just figure it out, everyone was busy doing their own thing and I had to make decisions for myself! Being one of the middle children, but also one of the youngest, I took on a lot of responsibilities, always looking for ways to help make things easier for everyone. But doing so also taught me that I was able to stand out on my own; I had to work hard to earn everything I had, there were no handouts, but there was always a hand up! No matter the distance between us and how incredibly different we all turned out, it is nice to know that we have each other’s backs, when push comes to shove!

PROFESSIONAL EXPERTISE

In all my past work, the key to success is building strong relationships; listening and hearing the needs and wants of others, understanding the “why” behind the ask. No matter what task is at hand, when I have built trust and good relationships with others, I can find a way to deliver strong results. I have experience in Account Management, Contract Administration, CRM Support, Business Development, but I am passionate about People; understanding why we do what we do and finding a way to work more efficiently. My current work here at L+T allows me to have the best of both worlds; I work with an amazing community, who are passionate about their work, as well as get to help manage work behind the scenes.

WHY L+T?

When I found myself part of a reduction in force, during the COVID pandemic, I took the opportunity to put myself first. I decided I was going to be pickier about future employment and not take the first job that came up; and I was fortunate enough to be in a good position to be able to do just that. When I saw the job posting for L+T, it honestly sounded too good to be true; a minority owned business who was focused on work with and for the BIPOC community, passionate about DEI, and paying their employees their worth! How could I pass up an opportunity like that; a job and company that I had been searching for since earning my degree, 20 years in the making! The more I learned about L+T, the more I knew I had to be part of the team; and am lucky enough to be chosen right back!

AREAS OF INTEREST + PASSIONS

Both professional and personal, I am most passionate about People; which is the main reason I chose a degree in Sociology. Looking at race and ethnicity, the history of our country and globe, education, seeing the changes and evolution of how we do what we do, and all the underlying reasons why. Often times, the subject is heavy, so I try and balance that out with spending quality time alone, as well as with family and friends, reading, listening to music, attending concerts and sporting events, cooking, billiards, watching movies, standup comedy and even a good Happy Hour!

ANY BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS?

I would have loved to read more in 2022, which is a new resolution for me in 2023, but here are my top reads for 2022, in no particular order (and 3 are thanks to me landing with L+T):

  • Tending by Amy Henderson
  • Show Your Worth by Shelmina Babai Abji
  • Pay Up by Reshma Saujani
  • The Witch Elm by Tana French
  • Look What You Made Me Do by Elaine Murphy

BENEFITS OF FLEXIBLE, HIGH-IMPACT WORK

I learned a new word in 2022, Ambivert: a person whose personality has a balance of extrovert and introvert features. I never realized the true stress I was putting on myself every day, trying to fit in a corporate box, with companies who I was a nameless, faceless employee number; making the commute each day to a busy office with hundreds of other people, doing a job I was not passionate about. I do not fit in a box, and Lions + Tigers recognized that; they took that box and allowed for me to stand on top of it to be seen and heard! I feel valued and appreciated, I am excited for work each day and always look forward to how I can help my team do great things! I have been allowed to be authentically me, in a space that works best for me, without fear of repercussions; the most beneficial of all!

ANY ADVICE FOR US?

My advice is, have faith and trust in yourself! We spend too much of our lives working to not love what we do. Stop being scared to try new things, stop being afraid to fail, and don’t worry about being told, no. My parents would always tell me, “You don’t know until you try!” and “Let them say, no; stop doing it for them!”. Don’t count yourself out before you have even begun; things are going to be scary, but that is also the feeling of excitement!

Taking Hacktion with L+T and Ada Developers Academy

🌟 Friday, October 14 to Saturday, October 15, 2022 🌟

With only a nine day lead out, a highly skilled group of L+T consultants managed to make Ada Developers Academy’s Take Haction! Hackathon a roaring success.

Ada Developers Academy is a non-profit coding bootcamp rooted in social impact. Ada’s mission is to prepare women and gender expansive adults to be software developers while advocating for inclusive and equitable work environments. They focus primarily on the needs of BIPOC and low-income communities.

Following the devastating news of the overturn of Roe V. Wade, Ada Developers Academy recognized the direct impact on the communities they serve and took action. During planning, they identified a need for additional help and called on Lions + Tigers to make their goals a reality. Two hackathon participants sit at laptops working on something. over their shoulder, an event coordinator is looking at their screen to see what they're working on.

With a lead time of nine days, our consultants were tasked with organizing a hybrid hackathon, Take Haction! Through strong collaboration with Ada staff, L+T consultants scoped and prepared the event to ensure the participants were geared for an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

During the event, our consultants wore multiple hats which included emceeing, coordinating marketing, organizing meals and more. Spread across two days, the 15 hours of the event were overseen by two teams. Gabriela Tamburino and was on site for the in-person event along with Cristine Gorman. Chris Harnois and Adee Wada supported the online participants. Additional content marketing support was provided from Alisha Sancivens.

L+T Consultant Gabriela emcees the event, speaking on a mic in front of the group of hackers in a blue shirt and jeans. The hackathon was a huge success. The efforts of eight teams resulted in amazing projects addressing issues related to racial justice + equity, gender equity, supporting community, climate action, and accessibility.

“When organizations are rooted in impact, magical things can happen,” Gabriela said.

We can’t agree more. It’s inspiring to see our consultants bring in their skills from other areas to make a last-minute ask a total success.

🌟 Friday, October 7, 2022 🌟

MyKimisms founder Kimfer Flanery-Rye met up with our EVP of People Operations Terry Rice on the Learnapalooza 7 stage to talk about sustainably incorporating DEI into your workplace model with a focus on systems change—that is, the idea that DEI exists in parallel of the professional development space. The pair spoke about how things like brand, people, and policy all should be influenced by DEI standards and practices.

Kimfer and Terry smiling in front of the stage where they will later give their talk.

The event, hosted in Bellevue on October 7thwas an opportunity for Kimfer and Terry to dig into the scope of the DEI work they’ve done at Lions + Tigers to create a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable culture from the inside out.

“I was deeply honored when the co-founders of Learnapalooza asked me to be a closing keynote. When that ask came, I wanted my talk to be titled, ‘DEI: Beyond Learning and Development’ even though I knew I’d be in front of over 150 Learning and Development industry folx. You cannot approach DEI without deeply looking at the systems that create the systemic issues and that starts with business strategy, policies, brand, and more,” Kimfer said. “Also, when you’re surrounded by over 150 people who are in the Learning and Development industry, you find yourself surrounded by innovative learning approaches. I thought a fireside chat style would be perfect as a closing keynote after a full day of learning. That thought made me immediately think about Lions + Tigers to join me on the stage. I couldn’t be more thrilled have Terry Rice, my client, to help moderate the conversation.”

She’s even on the board for SheJumps, a nonprofit focused on getting women and girls into outdoor activities!

Consultant Spotlight: Stephanie Selin

stephanie and her family in snow gear smiling in front of a wintry scene

ABOUT STEPHANIE

I grew up in the SF Bay Area, went to school in Colorado, moved to Seattle in the early 90’s without a job because the photos in the Chamber of Commerce brochure looked amazing (mailed, as this was early internet days!), then met my Seattle-native husband, and have been here ever since. In addition to my husband, Mark, my family includes two grown stepdaughters, 16-year-old twin daughters, two dogs, and a rabbit.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERTISE

My professional background has ranged from technology sales and partner management to building an executive engagement program and leading a non-profit fundraising team, plus many roles in between. Consistent is my draw toward building relationships and delivering positive experiences and outcomes. I’m currently working in Microsoft Philanthropies on supporting and engaging community college students through a Cybersecurity Scholarship Program in partnership with the Last Mile Education Fund.

WHY L+T?

I had a short stint with L+T a couple of years ago, and jumped at the opportunity to return.  I’m a strong believer and advocate for L+T’s approach in building high-impact and flexible teams that meet both client and consultant goals, and the purposeful focus on community and support for consultants is highly unique and valuable. I appreciate the opportunity to be part of the L+T team!

AREAS OF INTEREST + PASSIONS

My passions start with my family and include exploring the mountains by foot, ski, snowshoe and snowmobile. Any time I can be outside and physically active is a good day, and I often geocache as a way to find and explore new areas. Volunteering has also been a big part of my life, and I’m currently on the board of SheJumps, a national nonprofit focused on increasing the participation of women and girls in outdoor activities to nurture growth and transformation.

FAVORITE HIKE IN THE AREA?

For an in-city hike or walk I love St. Edward Park in Kenmore. The trees and landscape is beautiful, and you can either go the flat routes or get a workout on the more challenging paths. Plus my dog appreciates the swim in the lake midway through a loop, and is nearly dry by the time we get back to the car. Bonus if you go into the newly refurbished lodge for a snack or cocktail to celebrate afterward!

BENEFITS OF FLEXIBLE, HIGH-IMPACT WORK

I feel incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to work in a way that benefits me and my family and is both professionally and personally meaningful. By working remotely and part-time I’m able to be present for my family, contribute in a deep way to non-profit causes I care about, and have time for exercise or time off when I need it, all while leading and supporting interesting and impactful work projects. Win!

ADVICE FOR YOUR 2020 SELF

Appreciate quality time and experiences with your kids and hubby (which I did), and tackle the long-overdue photo album projects (which I didn’t do!).

ANY ADVICE FOR US?

Years ago I worked with a career coach who helped me think about my values and what lights me up, and I still have a tattered copy of the resulting “passion core elements” on my desk. I think it helps to understand ourselves (our strengths, what’s important to us) and try to align our work to our values but accept that there are trade-offs and allow ourselves some grace.

Consultant Spotlight: Jermey Evans

ABOUT JERMEY

Microsoft has been my primary client (and employer) for at least 10-years. My career has been an interesting journey that gave me a lot of great experience as well as some memorable stories along the way. I would have never thought my career starting with breaking into Microsoft buildings for the security team would eventually lead me to supporting launch events of some of my most favorite products, get to partner on projects with amazing colleagues and customers all around the world, and work with some of the most fantastic leaders in marketing to develop their organization and team culture. All that with the support of my partner, family, friends, and colleagues to whom I’ve had the honor to meet on this journey.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERTISE

The last 8-months I’ve been the Business Manager supporting the office of the GM, Wangui McKelvey and the Apps & Endpoints Team within the Modern Work organization. In this role, I provide a wide variety of support ranging from managing executive engagements and co-developing the Allyship DEI learning program to managing day to day activities like budgets, sourcing agendas, tracking progress on activities and just being there for the team.

Project management, resourcing, and optimism are my top 3 professional superpowers.

WHY L+T?

They put me in front of an amazing client who’s got great energy and vision. With a role that played to all of my strengths with room for growth to develop new skills.

AREAS OF INTEREST + PASSIONS

I’ll be honest that I love video games and everything geek. But I am truly passionate about music, people, and animals. Helping people and wildlife to an awesome soundtrack is my sweet spot.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE TYPE OF VIDEO GAME?

Adventure, anything that has great music where you can explore at your own pace, like Outer Wilds.

BENEFITS OF FLEXIBLE, HIGH-IMPACT WORK

I’m able to shift the pieces to work and life in a way that enables me to be a better uncle, partner, friend, and colleague to everyone in my life.

ADVICE FOR YOUR 2020 SELF

Stick to your new year resolution of deleting social media accounts to protect your mental health and focus on keeping those relationships strong through other means of connection and communication.

ANY ADVICE FOR US?

Whether you go into a new opportunity with a clear plan or no plan, be willing to be curious, lean into discomfort and to keep moving forward.

Connecting to community at WICxIcons

🌟 Thursday, September 29, 2022 🌟

Written by Brea Starmer

When I founded Lions + Tigers, I knew we would be a community fully dedicated to creating economic access for others. So, when I met the founders of Women in Cloud, our shared values alignment was obvious.

Women In Cloud (WIC) is on a mission to create one billion dollars in economic access for woman-founded businesses in tech.  Although there are many organizations dedicated to balancing gender equity in technology, this organization is quite special in how they approach it: through connected community.

One great example of that was the WICxICONS event a few weeks ago, creating a moment for the community to meet in real life after years of virtual-only engagements. I had the honor of being asked to be the Master of Ceremonies. It was my job to hold this community up and help them see all they had done and all they have yet to do together.

It was a night full of excitement and inspiration. We celebrated so much under the 2022 theme Collective Influence:

  • Gina Fratarcangeli shared remarks on her TedX talk called “Stop Climbing and Start Lifting”
  • Chaitra Vedullapalli and Michelle Pruitt had a fireside chat highlighting the incredible impact of the collective WIC ecosystem in the past year
  • Our client, Gena Goh, was recognized for her work opening channels for female-founded organizations at Microsoft as the Supplier of the Year

One of my favorite moments was during an exercise where I asked audience members to stand in support of statements. I said, “Stand up if you are dedicating to creating economic access for women in technology” and the entire room was on their feet cheering!

If you’d like to engage with Women in Cloud, I encourage you to consider these options:

  • Sponsor the organization to create access for others
  • Speak at an event and teach community members
  • Enroll female tech leaders in community membership
  • Participate in their events, especially the annual summit in January

A big thank you to the entire WIC Community. It was truly a magical night!

Our Spotlight series lets us tell the stories of the people who make up the Lions + Tigers community. Emily Luke (she/her), our Director of HR & Talent Acquisition, is a Washington native with extensive HR and recruiting experience across several brands including Starbucks (her order? A grande toffee nut latte). When she’s not working, she enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, and baking.

Team Spotlight: Emily Luke

ABOUT EMILY

I am a Washington native and I grew up in Port Angeles- a small town on the peninsula. When I was young, I couldn’t wait to get out of my small town and go to Seattle to attend University of Washington (Go Dawgs!). It was a great experience, but I hope to live in a small town again someday. For now, I love living in Issaquah with my husband Brian and my two boys Beckett (13) and Tucker (10). My stepdaughter Megan (23) has flown the coop and lives in Bellingham.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERTISE

I majored in Business and after I graduated, I started out my career in the Buying department at a department store in Portland, Oregon. Quickly I realized that it wasn’t the right time to live far from home and I wasn’t sure I liked the work. I moved back to Seattle and fell into a recruiting job at a staffing company with some friends I knew from college. After I got my footing in recruiting, I moved to San Francisco and about halfway through my 4 years in the Bay Area, I went to work in Recruiting at Starbucks and continued working for them when I came back to Seattle. I spent 7 years at Starbucks in Recruiting, Strategy and Product Management and then left the workforce for 5 years to stay home with my 2 boys. Since then, I’ve been working in HR & Recruiting in a part-time capacity and I love the flexibility that part-time work has given me!

WHAT’S YOUR STARBUCKS ORDER?
Grande 2 pump toffee nut latte 😊

WHY L+T?

After leading HR & Recruiting at another consulting firm for 5+ years, I wanted to find a company with values that were more aligned to mine. I was looking for an opportunity where I could bring my whole self to work and where being a mom was celebrated and working part-time wasn’t seen as less than. I have really enjoyed my time working for small companies because they tend to be more nimble, entrepreneurial and just plain scrappy. Lions + Tigers fit the bill and I’m glad to be here!

AREAS OF INTEREST + PASSIONS

I love spending time with my family and friends. I am blessed that my Dad and siblings all live in the PNW. I’m involved in my church, and I aim to do my bible study and to workout every morning…and I’m successful most of the time! 😊 As a family, we ski and hike and mountain bike. We live near Lake Sammamish and we enjoy the lake in the summer- paddleboarding, boating, etc. Traveling with my kids is a new love of mine and I’m dreaming about our next trip. Lately, I’ve reignited my love for baking and I’m baking a cake every Friday!

WHERE TO TRAVEL WITH KIDS?
Best kid-friendly destination would be Europe – easy to get around, kids love seeing, hearing and eating things they’ve never experience before and they appreciate home so much when we come back! We loved our time in England and Greece this summer!

PROFESSIONAL JOYS

Professionally I enjoy bringing teams together to find the levers to pull that will make the greatest impact on the success of the company as a whole. I love thinking strategically about what is possible and how to leverage people’s strengths so that we can win together.

BENEFITS OF FLEXIBLE, HIGH-IMPACT WORK

I love that I can work in a high impact leadership role while being there for my family when they need me. I love that L+T trusts me to do the work that needs to get done on a schedule that works for me. This is great match for how I work best so it’s been a great match!

ANY ADVICE FOR US?

For people seeking meaningful part-time work, believe that it’s out there! I recommend that people make a list of their personal values and match those up to the values of the company they work for. Seek a good match for your values and everything else is easy after that. When you work for a company where the company values are aligned with yours, you will have more energy to do your work and be more fulfilled in what you’re doing. Change is hard but when you land in the right place, it’s worth it!

Flying Together with AppMeetup & Lions + Tigers

by Janelle Montgomery | Sr. Project Manager & Practice Lead, Budget at Lions + Tigers

“We’re building a plane while we’re flying it.”

Oof. If I had a dime each time I heard or said this while working on various client projects, I’d be rich. Like, really rich. This is our tried and true metaphor and I think it paints an accurate picture.

The work we do requires defining and redefining our objectives, processes, and outcomes, often when the project or initiative has already been activated. And here is the beauty of consultant life: I can pull from all my past experiences and my own continually refined expertise to meet and exceed client needs, no matter the challenge. At the beginning of this year, my colleagues and I had an opportunity to board and build a new plane already in flight. But this time, we were able to take that journey with fellow supplier, AppMeetup.

The objective of the Microsoft Black Partner Growth Initiative accelerator program was to enable Black partners within the Microsoft ecosystem through trainings, coaching and group sessions, supporting the development of the skills and expertise these business leaders required to unlock new opportunities. Lions + Tigers brought a strong group of project and program managers and communications strategists to the table but needed business enablement experts to round out the team.

AppMeetup, who specializes in business coaching services for Managed Service Providers (MSPs), Independent Software Vendors (ISVs), and System Integrators (SIs), were precisely the experience the project needed.

Collaborating with another team of experts bolstered our ability to collectively drive impact within the broader Microsoft ecosystem. Over a few months, we developed program curriculum, drafted targeted email communications, and coordinated internal resources to deliver a successful experience for more than 50 partners. Several partners shared this accelerator program was game-changing for their business and they appreciated the safe-space to build community, network, and cultivate fruitful relationships with other partners.

Beyond the partner opportunities that were unlocked with this first group, the program we developed offers rich benefits to our client, as well. These partners became more engaged; our client gained a better understanding of the voice and needs of the group, where they each were in their journey, and how to further enable continued success. Plus, the value and learnings gained extend beyond the immediate; we continue to leverage insights from this inaugural program to influence the approach for the upcoming and future cohorts.

This partnership with AppMeetup allowed our teams to lean into our superpowers to create something that didn’t exist before. The experience proved to be rewarding, not only for participating partners, but our organizations, as well: we were nominated for the 2022 Microsoft Supplier Prestige Award for Supplier-to-Supplier Collaboration. And let me be clear, we don’t do this for awards and accolades. We truly care about the projects and initiatives we drive and support. But after several months of building an in-flight plane, the nomination sure felt good!

AppMeetup was the missing puzzle piece that pushed this effort forward. Their commitment to ensure this partner community has space to build, dream, and grow, took this plane further than we imagined. Our core values at Lions + Tigers are centered around community, impact, stewardship and courage and I am grateful to have taken this journey with a company that exemplifies the same. And next time we need a co-pilot (plus co-engineer and co-manufacturer of course!), I know who to trust with the other flight suit.

Our Spotlight series lets us tell the stories of the people who make up the Lions + Tigers community. Terry Rice (he/him) is our EVP of People Operations + Experience. He works closely with everyone at L+T to make our mission possible. Outside of work, his fiancé and dog keep him busy with weekend hikes and camping trips.

Team Spotlight: Terry Rice

ABOUT TERRY

I was born on a little island in Southeast Alaska. My hometown, Ketchikan, is the most southern town in the state and the first place most tourists, fortune seekers, and adventurers come across as they make their way to the Alaskan wilderness. Our small Alaska hometown proved beautiful but lacked the access to healthcare, education, and opportunity my parents wanted for their four children (I’m the youngest) back in the 80s. After stints in Washington and Maine, we landed in southern California for my formative years.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERTISE

My career started, unexpectedly, in the same place that I started, Southeast Alaska. At 18, I worked my first summer on a small overnight passenger vessel doing seven-night trips up and down Alaska’s inside passage and spending turnaround days in my hometown of Ketchikan. Fast forward five years, five promotions, and hundreds of trips to Alaska, the Columbia River, California Wine Country, Mexico’s Baja Sur, and the Islands of Hawaii, I was ready for some time on dry land. I made a change and started a six-year sprint through three unique tech start-ups doing everything from matching homeowners to house cleaners to selling food tours in Italy.

FAVORITE DESTINATION

Glacier Bay National Park is a stunning destination for whales, bears, eagles, glaciers, and mountains. If you haven’t had the chance to do a “polar plunge” in Glacier Bay, it’s an experience everyone should enjoy at least once.

WHY L+T?

At the time I joined Lions + Tigers I was in the middle of a campaign for public office. There was no way I could work 50+ hours in an office and be available to knock on doors, show up at fundraisers, spend time with voters, and attend events. I needed something that would let me do high impact work in a more flexible model. Lions + Tigers let me balance my desire to be successful at work with my busy campaign schedule. The campaign didn’t last, but my enduring commitment to building a more flexible world of work was here to stay.

AREAS OF INTEREST + PASSIONS

In my career I have led teams doing everything from HR and Recruiting to app development to hotel operations. While I have a personal affection for People Operations, my real passion is building great teams. Great teams offer a joyful, safe space for everyone to show up and do their very best work. Outside of work, my fiancé and I spend our time camping and hiking or obsessing over our little Beagle, Patsy.

BENEFITS OF FLEXIBLE, HIGH-IMPACT WORK

For me, the biggest benefit of flexible work is that I get to show up for my team or my family in the best way possible. It means the people I care about get the most effective, creative, and engaged version of myself because I can set boundaries and work when I am at my best. For our community, flexible work unlocks a more inclusive, high-impact team doing great work for each other and our clients.

ADVICE FOR YOUR 2020 SELF

I’d remind myself of my favorite Hillary Clinton quote: “Do all the good you can, for all the people you can, in all the ways you can, as long as you can.”

ANY ADVICE FOR US?

Never turn down an opportunity because you don’t think you are qualified. If you are presented with an opportunity, it’s because there is something inside you worth nurturing and in demand. Take the leap.
